Highlights from UN High Level Assessment of Africa’s Development Needs
Fr. Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, President of the 63rd General Assembly, opened this gathering by addressing the Assembly as “brothers and sisters.” This is a refreshing departure from the usual formal way of speaking in UN circles. He applauded the efforts of Africa to lift itself out of dire poverty, and urged member states to follow through on their commitment to support the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s), which are so essential if Africa is to move forward in addressing its most pressing needs. Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals October 17-19, 2008 In September 2000, heads of government of 189 countries signed the United Nations Millennium Declaration and committed the nations of the world to an agenda for action designed to establish a world free from want, a world free from fear, a world where all people are free to live in dignity. Despite progress made, 50,000 people die everyday as a result of extreme poverty; the gap between rich and poor people is increasing and nearly half the world’s population continues to live in poverty, 70% are women. The President of the General Assembly has announced he is setting up a high-level task force to review the global financial system, including major bodies such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in response to the current turmoil that is affecting all countries, large and small.
Miguel D’Escoto has appointed Economics Nobel Laureate and Professor, Joseph Stiglitz, to chair the panel, which will also suggest steps to be taken by Member States “to secure a more stable global economic order,” according to a news release. (More details)
